5 Cozy Interior Design Trends for 2021

Fashion and interior design, two artforms that make up a large part of how we see and experience the world. It may come as a surprise, but there’s plenty of overlap between these trends. In fact, interior designers often turn to the world of fashion for inspiration.

The reasoning is simple. It’s easier, quicker and more affordable to change your clothes than it is to change your furniture. Digital media has made fashion more accessible than ever before. As a result, the two worlds have become increasingly intertwined.

In the past year, the fashion industry has pivoted toward relaxed, laid-back style. As a result, interior design is going through a cozy renaissance. We absolutely love these comfy trends. You probably will too!

Kick back and unwind. Let’s take a closer look.

1. Cozy Furniture

In recent years, midcentury interior design has been a mainstay in more homes than possibly any other style in modern history. That is, until March 2020, when most of the world was asked to stay indoors as much as humanly possible. Here’s the silver lining: our homes are more relaxed and cozier than ever.

Sweaters made with fine fabrics and easy-to-wear pull-on pants have taken off in the past year. Much like its stylish counterpart, interior design has moved toward comfortable chairs, with soft and supple cushions.  We’re seeing big, fluffy blankets, plush rugs, knitted ottomans, and much more.

2. Soft Colours

Colour, or the lack thereof, has the ability to make or break an interior. Soft and neutral palettes have found a home (pun intended) in 2021. For colours to become popular, they need to reflect the buyer’s attitude.

Since the pandemic has created feelings of tension and unease in many people, consumers have been gravitating toward serene colours that instill a sense of serenity and stability. Home should be a safe haven. Soft pastels and light neutral tones create an innate sense of “everything’s going to be okay”.

Now more than ever, people want reassurance, mentally, emotionally, spiritually as well as physically—and their homes are the perfect canvas.

3. Plants

What’s left to do when you can’t go outdoors? Bring the outdoors to you, of course. Plants were a big interior design trend in 2020. In 2021, you can expect to see more of the same. Decorating your humble abode with plants is a simple, affordable and refreshing way to liven up your home.

Not only are plants aesthetically pleasing, they come with several health benefits. They improve air quality by reducing toxins and help lower blood pressure. Plants can also help energize the mind and influence better sleeping habits, which in turn decreases anxiety and other forms of stress.

Using plants for interior design is wonderful. It’s one trend we’d like to see become a permanent fixture in homes around the world.

4. Earthy Materials

Much like the lasting effects of the perfect colour palette, materials and textures make all the difference in a cozy home, especially when used with purpose and creativity. They can entirely change the way a person interacts with their environment.

Wood in earthy tones has made a comeback within the interior design world. Wicker and rattan pieces have been growing in popularity. Vintage and bold antiques are being mixed in with newer pieces to create tasteful and harmonious spaces.

5. Homely Outdoor Spaces

With very few public places to visit, people are transforming the outdoor spaces they can access. It’s easy to do in the warmer months when weather isn’t a factor. However, even in colder months and regions, backyards are turning into second living rooms.

They’re being fully equipped with outdoor heaters, smoke free fire pits, large, accommodating chairs and more. The best part? Many of these must-haves come in portable, compact sizes, for smaller, more quaint outside areas.

People everywhere are adapting and applying interior design concepts to their outdoor spaces.
